General sales managers are responsible for profitability in both the new and used vehicle departments and for customer retention.  To achieve this, they must effectively manage sales personnel; have a strong knowledge of the market, and an in-depth understanding of all sales departments’ financial data as well as strong customer relations skills.

The general sales manager is expected to uphold the highest ethical standards in every aspect of the job.

Sales consultants strive to meet daily, weekly and monthly vehicle sales quotas. Sales consultants assist customers by demonstrating how to operate a vehicle, providing test drives and identifying costs associated with the purchase.

The service director oversees the service and parts department and is responsible for controlling costs, building a loyal clientele, maintaining good employee relations, setting and obtaining sales and profit objectives and maintaining service records. Additionally, they must satisfy service concerns of all customers, ensure that service is performed at the highest level and operate the department profitably.

A service advisor (also referred to as a service consultant) works with customers to schedule service work and communicate any additional service needed.  Service advisors also handle the administrative and customer relations aspects of service department operations.

A Service Advisor’s primary responsibility is to interpret customer concerns and translate those concerns for the technician, so that the technician diagnoses and fixes problems correctly.

As with all positions within dealerships, service advisors are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.

Master technicians are tasked with repairing the most challenging and time-sensitive problems that vehicles have when they arrive at the service department.  Master technicians also may spend much of their time diagnosing and repairing unusual problems, rather than conducting more routine vehicle service or simple repairs. In large shops, master technicians are specialized, using a variety of computerized systems to complete their work.

As with all positions within dealerships, master technicians are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.

Entry-level service technicians inspect, maintain and repair automobiles, while training with skilled technicians.

The parts manager strives to return a satisfactory profit on the dealership’s investment in parts inventory.  Parts managers accomplish their objectives through the use of proper purchasing procedures, inventory control, staff utilization, security, pricing, merchandising, display and advertising.

The parts counter salesperson works at a pickup window to assist the service technicians and walk-in customers in purchasing parts and accessories.

The F&I Manager performs a number of vital functions, including reviewing and confirming the agreed-upon sales figures, preparing salespeople to confer with customers about needed services or products, consulting with customers to determine their wants and needs and presenting products to fulfill them, obtaining credit approval, and preparing delivery documentation. Throughout the process, the Finance Manager must practice strict legal compliance and ethical behavior.

Various jobs include accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tilting, billing, filing, human resources and switchboard.

A part-time receptionist to answer phones, issue temporary license tags, and other clerical duties.
